Children and youth have unique needs, experience unique challenges, and require specific support services and interventions. Mental health and substance use disorder services for children and youth cannot mirror adult services.

The data shown on this page focuses on high acuity youth as reported by hospitals in the State of Colorado.

• Data source: Data submitted to BHA from hospitals and from the Division of Child Welfare

Number of children and youth that spent time in inappropriate care settings past when they are releasable

• Extended Stay/Boarding: This chart shows how many children were in hospital extended stay or boarding, the total number of discharges, and the location the youth/children were discharged to for each quarter for the years 2023 and 2024. For 2023 Q4, there are four months’ worth of data represented. Quarters are based on calendar year, January - December.
• Stopgap: This chart shows how many children and youth in the State of Colorado spent one or more overnights in a county building or hotel for each three-month reporting period in years 2023 and 2024. Quarters are based on calendar year, January - December.
