What are recovery residences?
Recovery residences are a sober, safe, and healthy living environment that provides a supportive community for individuals in recovery from substance use disorder. Recovery residences focus on peer support and a connection to services that promote long-term recovery. Recovery residences can help individuals in recovery by reinforcing a substance-free lifestyle and offering direct connection to other peers in recovery, mutual support groups, and recovery support services.
Background on recovery residences
House Bill 19-1009, concerning support for recovery housing, established the requirement for recovery residences in Colorado to be certified by an approved certifying body. The legislation was created to promote safety, accountability, and quality in recovery housing across the state.
Approved certifying body
BHA currently contracts with Ohio Recovery Housing (ORH) to administer the certification process for recovery residences in Colorado. Established in 2014, ORH is committed to developing and operating quality alcohol- and drug-free living in a community of recovery for people with substance use disorders. It is an affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) in meeting the quality established by the NARR Standards.
